The BHS recommends practical hands-on training with an Accredited Professional or at one of our Approved Centres if you are training towards BHS qualifications or Challenge Awards. You can arrange your own training alongside attending courses or events listed below. We encourage you to gain experience working with and riding different types of horses as you progress your skills and confidence.
When discussing your training needs with a coach or centre, ask about the qualifications they hold so you know if they’re eligible to complete your Skills Record if needed.
You can add variety to your training with self-study by viewing our Career Pathways Training Guides and our ‘how to…’ video series, as well as reading our horse health and welfare advice and our ‘Complete Horsemanship’ books that accompany our Career Pathway qualifications. You will also find recommended reading lists on the specific unit page of each assessment.
Don’t forget, the BHS Career Transition Fund is available to support your training towards Stage 2 and Stage 3 qualifications. View our funding and support page to discover other sources of funding that may be available.
The training advertised below, unless specified, is delivered by external providers. The BHS is not responsible for the content of the training. There may also be one-off events organised by BHS Regional Committees - see our local event listings.
