Stage 1 Care
This career certificate will demonstrate your knowledge and responsibilities of working safely on a stable yard. It will also acknowledge your practical skills in caring for the welfare and daily management of horses, including horse behaviour and health, grooming and suitable use of equipment and tack.
Who is this qualification for?
- Anyone who is looking to start a career with horses
- Anyone looking to enhance their knowledge in the care and management of horses
- Anyone aspiring to become a BHS Stage 2 Foundation Groom
Entry requirements
- A minimum age of 13 years
- BHS Silver Candidate Membership or Gold Membership. International Students to be Overseas Full or Overseas E-Members.

BHS Stage 1 Care will provide you with an understanding of the responsibilities of working safely on a stable yard with empathy towards both horses and colleagues.
Training for this qualification
All applicants are encouraged to undertake practical training at a BHS Approved Centre or with a BHS Accredited Professional Coach to ensure you are ready for your assessment.

If you have been unsuccessful on your first assessment, we encourage you to call us to book a re-sit.
Of course, we will also answer any questions you may have and provide you with feedback at this stage. You may have been successful against some, but not all of the assessment criteria, in which case we can just assess you on the sections on which you were not so strong.
