Example BHS Stage 3 assessment timings
Care, Lunge, Ride Dressage and Ride Jump
This is an example. Assessment activities may be timetabled in any order.
If candidate group numbers are less than stated, time allocated for the activity may reduce. The BHS may adjust timetables for any reason

Arrival at the assessment centre | The BHS will inform you of your arrival time, via email, within two weeks of your assessment date. | |
Walk the show jump course and cross country courses | If you are taking the Ride Jump assessment you should walk the courses before your briefing begins | It’s up to you how long you want to allocate to walk the course. Just leave enough time to do this before your assessment briefing begins. We recommend at least 30 minutes. |
Assessment welcome and introduction | All candidates assemble for an assessment welcome and introduction.

Care A | Assessed in groups of up to two candidates.
Care A will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Tack (including bits and studs) • Conformation |
2 hours. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks. |
Care B | Assessed in groups of up to two candidates.
Care B will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Roles and responsibilities of a groom • Nutrition • Fitness • Behaviour and handling horses • Health • Anatomy and physiology • Managing a turnout area |
1 hour. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks. |
Lunge | Lunge a horse to maintain training. | You will lunge for approximately 20 minutes then an approximate 10 minute discussion with the assessor. |
Ride Dressage | You will ride two horses in this section. You may be riding in a group of up to six riders, working in open order. You will meet the horses in the arena where you will be paired with your first horse to ride. The ride will stop, all dismount and you will be paired with your second horse to ride for the remaining time. | 45 minutes. Followed by a short discussion with your assessor. |
Ride Jump | You will ride two horses in this section. You may be riding in a group of up to six riders. You will ride one horse over show jumps, and the second horse over cross country fences as described in the syllabus. | 1 hour. Followed by a short discussion with your assessor |
Assessment finish | Sign out of your assessment. |
Stage 3 Coaching

Coaching theory and personal development | Roles and responsibilities of a coach. Planning for professional development. | Assessed within the discussions after each coaching session. |

Stage 3 Riding Out

Riding Out B | Assessed in groups of up to six candidates.
Riding Out B will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Roles and responsibilities • Ride planning (risk assessment, preparing route, ride management) • Horse assessment (suitability for trekking) |
1 hour 30 minutes. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks. |
