Performance Centre Manager with Riding

The Performance Centre Manager with Riding (Show jumping) will allow you to fulfil a senior strategic management position within an equestrian business, such as an equine college or large equestrian centre.

You will also be able to work as a rider and trainer of horses, taking responsibility for their training, development and care for competition. You will have a broad knowledge of all aspects of business management and horse care, including the breeding and management of young horses.

You will be able to support the training and development of junior staff and BHS career students, in addition to offering advice and guidance to clients on all aspects of horse care and management. You may also decide to work on a freelance basis either as a groom and/or consultant at a high level.

This career certificate endorses you as an ambassador for the BHS at home and overseas, showing commitment to continued development and leading standards of horse care and management with the welfare of the horse central to your ethos. You will hold the BHS values at the heart of all you do as a role model in the industry.

Entry requirements

  • Age: 18
  • Qualifications: BHS Stage 4 Senior Yard Manager with Riding, or equivalent. If you hold other equestrian industry qualifications and/or significant industry experience, please contact the Education Team or see our Direct Entry procedure. We would like to highlight that Direct Entry is especially encouraged for competition riders and professionals who have significant experience of working in the industry, especially working in large yards.
  • Other: BHS Accredited Professional or BHS Gold Member

Qualifications Guidelines

Section 1: Care and Welfare

Within this section you will demonstrate your competence and comprehensive knowledge for managing the care and welfare of horses and ponies in a range of situations.

Training guidelines

Our training guidelines have been updated during this Covid-19 period:

  • You cannot take Performance Centre Manager with Riding assessments at a centre you currently work in or have worked in in the last 12 months.
  • You cannot take Performance Centre Manager with Riding assessments at a centre that you have regularly trained at in the last six months- a maximum of one days trainings every two month is allowed (please note this has been relaxed to a maximum of one days training every month during the Covid period).

Re-sitting your assessment

If you have been unsuccessful on your first assessment, we encourage you to call us to book a re-sit.

Of course, we will also answer any questions you may have and provide you with feedback at this stage. You may have been successful against some, but not all of the assessment criteria, in which case we can just assess you on the sections on which you were not so strong.

Groom with Riding Show Jumping pathway

  • Stage 1

Complete Horsemanship

Stage 1 Complete Horsemanship provides an industry recognised foundation of practical knowledge in riding, care and stable management to progress through any career pathway.

  • Stage 2

Foundation Groom with Riding

BHSQ Level 2 Foundation Groom with Riding (Stage 2) is for anyone looking to start their career as a groom and rider in the industry.

  • Stage 3

Groom with Riding - Jump

BHSQ Level 3 Groom with Riding - Jump (Stage 3) demonstrates the skills to maintain a horse’s training and ride up to a height of one metre for show jumping and 90 centimetres for cross-country.

  • Stage 4

Senior Yard Manager with Riding - Show Jumping

BHSQ Level 4 Senior Yard Manager with Riding (Stage 4) (Show Jumping Pathway) is for those with an established career in the equestrian industry. This demonstrates competence to take responsibility for a horse’s show jumping training and development.
